Musical #2: Till the clouds roll by (1946)

What fascinates me is that this could be categorized as a kind of mash-up disguised as a biopic of the greatest songs of Kern ... the truth is that I din’t knew it was a movie about him and his work. It was the rain of stars that  appear on it made me decide to watch it and put it in the counting. In fact there is a very funny story, I learn of this: in 1970, MGM forgot to renew the rights of the film, and so became public domain, that is: this film circulates free ... like the sun at dawn.
There is a scene (actually all) but one in particular that should be mandatory for all musicians studying jazz and contemporary music or orchestration and even audiovision: where the actors playing Jim and Jerome are set to orchestrate "in their minds," a song from the second ... they slowly begin to add and modify the orchestrations in the march of the scene synchronously with intra-diegetic and extradiegetic music (because above all each one has a piano) and that scene ... is a work of art ... well indeed the whole the movie’s a work of art, because you got it all: Judy directed by Vincent, Angela Lansbury, Grayson ... and two scenes that I loved:
Lena Horne (she is a godessss!) playing Can’t help loving That Man ... and here I  say: don’t come to me with anachronistic phrases and lectures like "this is a horror love is not a possession, you can’t speak of a person as a thing" "you can’t posses people" "Love was invented by the French "" she’s a submissive woman" " this is so machist" to " women like bad guys ... and then complain over it "and so on!, shhh...eat all those words, and just shut up, because you are neither  Jerome Kern nor Lena Horne and listen to this ebony goddess interpret this fabulous song.
And then! if you wanted bad guys! nothing more and nothing less than Frank Sinatra playing Ol 'Man River,' -I tell you if didn’t know this is supposed to be sung by an africanamerican baritone because it is a musical set in the misissipi in the nineteenth century or something like that .- ... but what happens when thisguy from Brooklyn 'comes out singing this?
It happens that neither he or you believe him! chuckle and grin with that contained smile all the time ... I think he knows that when he sings “You and me, we sweat and strain, Bodies all achin' and wracked with pain, Tote that barge and lift that bale ...Ya get a little drunk and ya lands in ja-ail ...” are prophetic words in his life ... only not the kind of work and pain that Kern had in mind when he compossed the song.
Even when he sings and says " I gets weary (more laughter) and so sick of tryin'” puts the face of totaaaaaaaaaal cheater! No Saturday night excuses for me Blue eyes! ... you never get tire of try anything!!! ever!!! (I say this with humor frank, you know I love you)
That's it for today's cinema lovers!
